I ran my errands for the day and tried not to think about what happened in that truck... and failed miserably.

The way James felt inside me aside, the way he looked at me touched something much deeper inside me than I would’ve ever suspected. He made me feel wanted, he made me feel cared for… He made me feel protected. Could I really contemplate the notion of going for more with him when all of this mess was over?

If I was of a clear mind, I told myself, I would kick him out before things got any messier. But there was too much at stake and when I went to go pick up Jack, I realized there was even more at stake than I wanted to think about.

“Hey buddy, how was school?”

“It was OK,” he shrugged, then seemed to light up as he told me, “I was ready to come home, though. James said he was going to help me build a new Lego car, and I’ve been thinking all day about the best way to put it together…” Jack proceeded to fill me in on all the details of how this Lego car would be put together, and all the ideas that James had given him. He was so excited as he told me how cool James was and how much he liked him living at the house. “I like that he’s going to be my dad,” he said.

“Whoa there, buddy, I mean, I know you like him, but just because he’s living there doesn’t mean-”

“But if you get married, he’ll be my dad. I think he’ll be a good one,” he said thoughtfully. “He’s really good with Legos, he’s going to teach me some cool car stuff, and he makes you laugh… You never used to laugh that much, Mommy,” he pointed out.

I swallowed hard at this and smiled at my little boy. He was right… And I had no idea what I was going to do about this.

This was getting way out of control and I would need to sit down with James and have a serious talk about this when we got home. I loved that Jack loved being around him, but I didn’t want him to get his hopes up that James would be in our lives for good… Quite frankly, I was worried about getting my hopes up myself.
